Unlike the aging dry skin, the young dry skin is mainly characterized by a lack of water in the stratum corneum – the outermost, top layer of the skin. As a result, it appears as lacking moisture, dry, and dull. The feeling that people who suffer from this skin condition complain about, is that the skin feels dry and tight, a sensation which the moisturizer can only relieve for a short period of time.

A lack of moisture can appear in all types of skin, including oily skin, and mainly derives from the loss of water from the stratum corneum layer of the skin. The water content of this layer is influenced by various environmental factors, including the levels of moisture in the air, the climate conditions, and the skin-care practices. A low level of moisture in the air, cold and winds, or excessive cleaning of the skin with soap, damage the stratum corneum, and the skin's natural moisturizing factors. The skin's water content holds many important roles beyond the aesthetic problem or the unpleasant sensation of dry, tight skin. In fact, numerous skin functions may be damaged without a satisfactory level of moisture, and as a result so are its health, wholeness, and appearance. Therefore, neglecting this condition, in oily skin too, accelerates the aging process, and causes the loss of elasticity and vitality, as well as the appearance of premature wrinkles.
