Exposure to the sun's UV rays is considered the primary cause of damage to the skin. UV rays impact function and survival of many types of cells and cause long-term damage which contributes to the skin's aging process, and primarily accelerates the appearance of pigmentation and dark spots.
Melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color and absorbs ultraviolet radiation, is known for its anti-oxidant qualities that combat UV-induced free radicals. Exposure to the sun causes the tyrosinase enzyme to accelerate melanin production. This enzyme produces melanin from an amino acid called tyrosine. As we age, the accumulated UV exposure changes the pigmentation in the skin, causing freckles, sun spots and age spots.
