They penetrate the dermal layer, where they damage the DNA in the skin-cells, and createpro-inflammatory components, which lead to the destruction of the collagen and elastin proteins. The UVB rays are absorbed by the epidermis, and they are the ones that cause sunburns.  

Sunscreens are the most important and proven element in the protection of the skin from these damages. The evidence for their effectiveness originates in clinical studies, which point to their effectiveness both in protecting the skin from premature aging and in the prevention of skin cancer.
